Da Vinci lance for Prostate cancer

Da Vinci lance for Prostate cancer

Today, prostate cancer, which has reached a quarter of all cancers, ranks second among lung cancers among men. The risk of developing prostate cancer among all cancers is 27%. Prostate cancer average is 28 per hundred thousand in the world, 60 per hundred thousand in Europe and 37 per hundred thousand in our country. This means that around 900 thousand people worldwide are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually. On the other hand, approx 258 thousand people die from prostate cancer annually. One in every 7 men has a risk of getting prostate cancer, and one in thirty-six men is at risk of death from prostate cancer. When prostate cancer is caught at an early stage and the correct treatment is applied, the success rate is close to 90%. On the other hand, while prostate cancer is very rare in men younger than 50 years old, it is very commonly seen in men older than 60 years old.

PSA SCAN IS NECESSARY

Although the cause of the disease is not known for sure, it is known that genetic and environmental factors have an effect on its presence. Prostate cancer does not lead to any complaints in the early stage, the patient are mostly diagnosed after the PSA scan and examinations. Prostate cancer diagnosis rate with biopsy due to high PSA level after the age of fifty is 80%, the diagnosis rate after biopsy following a rectal examination is 20%. With the PSA scan, the death rate from prostate cancer has decreased. PSA scan enabled the early diagnosis of the cancer and has given a chance of treatment. Early diagnosis increases the chance of recovering from the disease in prostate cancer cases as with all cancer cases.

URINARY INCONTINENCE IS PREVENTED

After the early diagnosis, prostate cancer patients have an operation. Unlike other organ cancers, robotic surgery has two important advantages in prostate surgery such as preventing the urinary incontinence and preservation of previous sexual function in addition to getting rid of cancer. The sphincter which helps blocking the urine from uncontrolled discharge is localized on the front side of the prostate, the nerves enabling the erection reach the penis passing through the prostate. It is very important to preserve these two tissues in prostate cancer surgery. Da Vinci, used in robotic surgery, provides 3-dimensional and 16-fold magnification, as well as 540 degree movement of its arms, allowing the surgeon to see very well and protect tissues better. After positioning the patient properly in robotic surgery, 4 8-mm holes and a 10-mm hole are opened and the camera, 3 arms of the robot  and the camera, the 3 arms of the robot and the extractor are placed. While assistant doctor and nurse stay beside the patient, the surgeon performs the operation by getting to the console. In this surgery, the robot surgeon can enlarge the 3D as much as s/he wants, and also enables the robot to do very skillful work with the arms move by 540 degrees. However it should be remembered that the robot does not perform the operation. The success is completely up to the surgeon’s experience.
